Political Action
Getting active can take many forms… you can help by shaping political policy.
The partnership consists of nine organizations working to shape federal political policy. Our two legislative priorities for 2007/08: 1. Analysis of current policy and recommendations for future policy: The Action Group urges Congress to develop a policy and administrative apparatus that will analyze the US government’s implementation and effectiveness of policy formulated over the past seven years. This includes an examination of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). To that end, the Action Group is working with several Members of Congress to draft legislation and to determine other vehicles to achieve this goal. These other vehicles could include hearings, Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports, and Congressional Research Service (CRS) requests. The current bill, introduced in the House, is the Congressional Commission on the Abolition of Modern Day Slavery (HR 2522). To learn more about this bill, its potential revisions, and how it fits into our overall strategy to acquire this important information for the anti-slavery and anti-trafficking movement, please click here. 2. Reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA): This groundbreaking legislation is the cornerstone of the United States Government’s response to human trafficking and modern-day slavery. During the past seven years since the bill was signed into law, nongovernmental service providers and governmental policymakers have learned important lessons about how we can improve and strengthen the TVPA. Taking a victim-centered approach, the Action Group recommends amending the TVPA to ensure: identification of victims within the US; provision of services to victims; strengthening of the annual trafficking in persons (TIP) report; and prosecution of traffickers. Write your Senators and Congressperson. Believe it or not, your Congressional representatives listen to you. They want your support. Write them and urge their sponsorship of important legislation, like HR 3887, the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2007.
