STUDENTS BUILDING THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT

The Underground University: How One Campus Hit the Classroom and the Streets to Fight Modern Slavery

Students at the University of San Francisco learned that their city was a major center for trafficking in human beings. This 30-minute documentary tracks their personal discovery of modern slavery, their successful efforts to gather evidence against local traffickers, and their passion to fuel a student movement.

MAPPING AND MONITORING SLAVERY

Click the Picture for a FULL SIZE Version The Erasmus Living-Learning community of the University of San Francisco is committed to social justice. Modern-day slavery is their current focus, and as diverse group of students, with varying perspectives, joined the Not for Sale Campaign's abolitionist movement. They have dedicated themselves to creating a university research center that maps and monitors slavery in the San Francisco Bay Area. Using this as a template, their hope is to strive to have a national, and eventually international, network of university-based research centers that document slavery around the world.

The goal for the project is to locate trafficking 'red flag' sites in the San Francisco Bay Area, educate our local community about the realities of slavery in our city and region and to hold accountable all institutions that fail to act to eradicate slavery.

WIL BERRY- MEDICAL STUDENT AT UCSF:

Wil BerryI was blessed with a freedom -- not just to attend school, play sports, and build relationships -- but a freedom to seek purpose, meaning, and a future. I am currently studying medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. This summer I will be going to Cambodia to do grassroots medical work with the Agape Restoration Center. Founded in 2005, ARC is reaching out to the girls and women of Cambodia who have been sexually exploited and abused and are beginning the work of rebuilding their lives. Healthcare workers are in a unique position to advocate for people, for the suffering as well as the sick. I have joined the Not for Sale Campaign because, while recognizing the complexities involved with this issue, I believe in the simplicity of their vision: that no person, now or ever, should be for sale.
